WHAT TO DO WHEN YOUR PIPES BURST?
As Northern Colorado homeowners well know, burst pipes are an all too common occurrence when we hit subzero temperatures. While water is necessary for life, it can wreak major havoc on your plumbing systems.
Burst pipes, whether from freezing or other sources of pressure, can cause major water damage if the situation is not immediately taken care of. If your pipes burst, these are important things to keep in mind:
- Find and shut off the main water valve. In most homes, you’ll find the shutoff valve in the basement next to the water heater.
- If there is flooding, shut off electricity to the affected room(s). Standing water can pose a great risk for electric shock. Play it safe and turn off electricity in rooms where water has pooled.
- Call a licensed professional plumber. This is the first thing you should do after immediate damage control is completed. Be sure to explain the situation and ask for a straightforward price estimate.
- Take note of damages and call your insurance company. Water damage due to burst pipes may be a covered loss under your insurance policy. Make sure to carefully document damages, taking photos and video whenever possible.
